PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team opens the 2017 campaign this weekend in New York. The Rams first play on Friday, Sept. 1 in the NYIT Tip-Off against the host NYIT and Le Moyne in Old Westbury, N.Y. On Saturday, Jefferson participates in the Long Island Invitational in Brookville, N.Y. against Merrimack and the host, LIU Post.

The Rams play on Friday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. A free, live video stream will be available for the NYIT Tip-Off on Friday.

The Jefferson volleyball squad was picked as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference preseason favorite in the south division heading into the fall season. The Rams garnered 11 first-place votes, tops for the seven-team division and 14-team conference. Coach Moyer spoke with the CACC Audio Network earlier this month about heading into the season.

In 2016, the Rams reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after winning their first-ever CACC Championship which came with the league's automatic postseason bid. Head coach Tim Moyer's squad went 29-5 overall including 18-1 in conference play, 10-1 at home and 12-2 on the road.

The Le Moyne Dolphins went 22-7 last season which ended at the NCAA Tournament to American International College on Dec. 1. The Dolphins were recently tabbed to finish third in the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference coaches' preseason poll.

NYIT went 29-6 last fall including an 11-3 mark in conference play. The Bears advanced to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Adelphi on Dec. 1 in the first round before falling to American International on Dec. 2. NYIT was picked to finish first in their 2017 preseason conference coaches' poll and senior captain Allison Fowler was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year in the East Coast Conference.

LIU Post went 15-13 a season ago including an 8-6 mark in conference play. The Pioneers' season ended in the first round of the East Coast Conference Championship.

Merrimack went 6-23 in 2016. The Warriors and Rams meet on Saturday at the Long Island Invitational and again a week later at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Following this weekend's matches in New York, the Rams play at Millersville in Millersville, Pa. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 before heading to Wilmington, Del. for the Wildcat Invitational on Sept. 8-9 for three matches.
