MATCH ONE – Jefferson vs. NYIT (L, 25-13, 25-10, 25-22)
The Rams fell to the Bears in the 2017-opening match in three sets from NYIT's Recreation Hall. NYIT jumped out to an early 10-3 advantage in the first set. The Rams tried to keep it close but NYIT, East Coast Conference preseason favorites, extended the lead to as much as 11 before grabbing the first, 25-13.
In a similar fashion, the Bears rushed out to an early lead in the second set, going from 1-1 to 10-1 before the Rams scored on a kill by freshman Abigail Kress (Lansdale, Pa. / Gwynedd Mercy Academy). NYIT took the second set, 25-10.
Jefferson played the Bears tight in the third and final set. Though the Rams could not extend the contest, they evened up the set 13-13 after trailing 7-3 early on. Jefferson kept it close for most of the third and gained a 15-14 advantage before NYIT came back for the 25-22 win.
Wensel and freshman Caitlin Crespo (Womelsdorf, Pa. / Berks Catholic) each had a team-high nine digs in the season opener.
Senior Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa. / Emmaus), Crespo and Wensel also added service aces in the loss.
MATCH TWO – Jefferson vs. Le Moyne (L, 25-20, 16-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-12)
The Rams went five sets just four times in 2016 but did so on the 2017 season-opening weekend in a hard-fought, five-set loss to Le Moyne, who were picked to finished third in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Dolphins won the first set before Jefferson took two and three for a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth.
In the second set, Jefferson took an initial 5-1 lead before Le Moyne tied it up at 7-all. The two squads exchanged points until the Rams never let go of their 10-9 advantage, eventually winning the second, 25-16.
Much like the second, the Rams and Dolphins were close early on before Jefferson went up by as much as seven and held on for the 25-18 third-set victory.
But Le Moyne took control of the early stages of the fourth before Jefferson tied it up at 18-all after trailing by as many as five. The fourth went down to the wire as the two squads were tied up 24-24 late. Le Moyne's Jessica Miller finished off the set with two kills as the match was even 2-2 heading into the fifth.
In the final set, the Rams went out to a 3-1 advantage before Le Moyne tied it up 3-3. The Dolphins eventually went up 5-4, a lead they did not relinquish for the remainder of the match.
Wensel had a team-high 16 kills and two service aces in the loss for the Rams while freshman Logan Dontell (Red Lion, Pa. / Red Lion Senior) owned a .385 hitting percentage with five kills.
As a team, the Rams hit .170 against Le Moyne compared to their .107 hitting percentage versus NYIT in the first match.
