MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to the Millersville Marauders on Wednesday evening in Millersville, Pa. With the 26-24, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22 loss, the Rams moved to 1-4 on the young season while Millersville remained undefeated at 5-0.
Millersville jumped out to an early 5-0 run in the first set. Trailing by as many as eight at 18-10, the Rams fought back towards the end of the first, getting within two at 22-20 and 24-22 before tying it up at 24-all. The Marauders grabbed the last two points to win the first, 26-24.
Similarly in the second, Millersville came out hot, grabbing an early 7-1 advantage, leading to a Jefferson timeout. The Rams climbed back to get within two at 9-7 before Millersville extended their lead, keeping the set out of each as they won, 25-16.
Following intermission, Jefferson came out in the third, taking an early 3-1 lead before the Marauders tied it up at 3-all. A kill by sophomore Mariah Cadzow put the Rams back on top, a place they would stay for the remainder of the third as they won 25-20.
In a similar fashion to the third set, Jefferson scored the first two points before the match was even at 4-4 early on. Six-straight points led to an 8-4 advantage for Millersville. Jefferson wrestled back after a timeout. After trailing 9-7, the Rams tied it up 9-9 before scoring three-straight to take a 12-9 edge before a Millersville timeout. The Rams scored three more after the Marauder timeout to take a set-high, six-point lead at 15-9. Millersville won the next five points to get within one before taking the lead for good at 18-17. A couple late points by Jefferson got the Rams within two at 24-22 before a Millersville kill sealed the set, 25-22, and the match, 26-24, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22.
Junior Courtney Wensel led the Rams with 25 kills and 23 digs. Senior Corinne Justus had two service aces on the night while hitting .167. Freshman Cassandra Hickman had a .625 hitting percentage with five kills on eight attack attempts. Freshman Logan Dontell tallied the lone solo block on the evening while Justus had three block assists.
The Rams gear up for the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Wilmington in Wilmington, Del. on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 8-9) for four matches against Adelphi, American International, Franklin Pierce and Merrimack.
