NEWARK, Del. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (3-4) opened play at the Wilmington-hosted Wildcat Invitational on Friday in Delaware. Between the two matches on Friday, the Rams defeated both Adelphi and Franklin Pierce in four sets. The two-day invitational continues tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 9.
MATCH ONE – ADELPHI – W, 25-17, 26-28, 25-23, 25-17
The Rams took the first, third and fourth sets to win the neutral site match over the Panthers in the first match of the Wildcat Invitational. Freshman Abigail Kress led Jefferson with 15 kills followed by junior Courtney Wensel with 14 and senior Corinne Justus with 13. Freshman Caitlin Crespo had a match-high 28 digs in the victory while Wensel followed her up with 15, coming as her fourth double-double on the young season. Freshman Logan Dontell had the lone solo block for the Rams in addition to three block assists. Justus had six block assists on the evening.
Jefferson fell behind early, 4-3, in the first but used a couple of three-point runs to make it 6-4 and 12-8, in their favor. A four-point run towards the end of the first put the Rams up six, 17-11, before late kills by Wensel secured the first.
The Rams jumped out to an early 12-3 lead in the second before extending it up to 10 points at 18-8. But the Panthers scored the next 12 of 14 points to even the set at 20-all. Jefferson went ahead late 24-22 before the Panthers tied it up and took the lead at 25-24. The game would even up at 25 and 26 before Adelphi won the set.
The third featured six ties as the Rams found themselves down late, 18-13. Jefferson would go on a run to tie it up at 20-20 before taking the lead and eventually the set, 25-23.
Jefferson took control of the fourth to secure their first victory of the Wildcat Invitational. The Rams scored the final nine of 13 points to win 25-17.
MATCH ONE – FRANKLIN PIERCE – W, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 25-16
Wensel grabbed her fifth double-double in the second win of the day for the Rams behind 14 kills and 21 digs. The junior also led the squad with three service aces. Justus hit a match-high .500 with 17 kills on 28 total attacks. Cadzow totaled her third double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs to go along with a .211 hitting percentage. As a team, Jefferson hit .253 in the victory.
The Rams only dropped the second set on Friday night after falling behind 7-2. The Rams trailed for most of the second before tying it up at 23-23 and 24-24, but Franklin Pierce would win the set after a couple Rams' attack errors.
In the third and fourth sets, Jefferson had two six-points runs and a five-point stretch as they comfortably closed out the victory in Newark, Del., 25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 25-16.
The Wildcat Invitational continues tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 9 as Jefferson takes on American International (noon) and Merrimack (2 p.m.).
