PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (10-5, 5-0 CACC) won its seventh-straight match on Wednesday, defeating the USciences Devils (2-6, 1-4 CACC) in straight sets for the CACC win, 25-8, 25-21, 26-24.
Freshman Abigail Kress hit a match-high .429 behind 10 kills and just one attack error while Junior Courtney Wensel led the Rams with 12 kills on the evening. Freshman Logan Dontell hit .500 in the win with six kills. Senior Corinne Justus also notched six kills with a .333 hitting percentage.
As a team, Jefferson hit .233 to the Devils' .086 in the sweeping victory.
The Rams only trailed for one point across the three sets.
Jefferson comfortably won the first set, 25-8, as the Rams closed out the set win with an eight-point run.
The Rams had an eight-point margin late in the second set at 20-12 before the Devils closed the gap with a six-point run to make it 20-18 in favor of the Rams. Jefferson won four of the next five points to take it to set point before a Devils' attack error finished it off.
Up two sets to none, USciences grabbed its only lead of the night at 1-0 at the beginning of the third. The Rams won eight of the next 10 to make it 8-3. A short run gave Jefferson a 14-7 advantage before the Devils came back to tie it at 22-22. The two squads were tied at 23-23 and 24-24 before a kill by Kress and Justus clinched the victory for the Rams.
Volleyball returns to action at home against Caldwell on Saturday, Sept. 30 from the Gallagher Center. Action begins at noon.
