Volleyball Tops Caldwell, Stays Undefeated in CACC Play After Eighth-Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (11-5, 6-0 CACC) topped the Caldwell Cougars (10-4, 5-1 CACC) on Saturday afternoon from the Gallagher Center by a 25-27, 27-25, 25-21, 25-21 final. The victory comes as the eighth straight for the Rams and tabs them as the last undefeated team in conference play.

The Cougars came into the match with an unblemished CACC record at the top of the North Division. The Rams too were undefeated at the top of the South Division.

Junior Courtney Wensel notched her ninth double-double of the season in the victory behind a match-high 21 kills and 15 digs. Senior Corinne Justus hit a match-high .375 with 13 kills. Freshman Abigail Kress also notched 13 kills in the win while sophomore Mariah Cadzow was the fourth Ram with a double-digit kill total at 11.

As a team, Jefferson owned a .248 hitting percentage to Caldwell's .151.

In the first set, the teams exchanged points before evening up at 15-15. The Cougars won the next six points to take a 21-15 lead. The Rams fought back, winning eight of the next nine to go up 23-22. Jefferson had a set point at 24-23 before the Cougars tied it up. The Rams got another chance at 25-24 but could not capitalize as the Cougars won the next three points to take the set, 27-25.

In a similar fashion, the second set came down to the wire. Jefferson led 22-20 before the Cougars evened it up 23-23. The teams were also tied at 24-24 before Caldwell had a set point at 25-24. Jefferson went on to tie it up at 25-all before winning the next two points, 27-25.

Jefferson trailed for a beginning stages of the third set, getting the lead for the first time at 17-16. Once they had it, the Rams did not give it up as they went up two sets to one, 25-21.

Up two points midway through the fourth, Jefferson used a six-point run to go up 21-14. The Cougars would not go easy, fighting off four-straight set points after Jefferson originally led 24-17. With the scored now 24-21, Kress clinched the match with a kill, 25-21.

Jefferson Volleyball returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Chestnut Hill.
