LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (11-7, 6-1 CACC) forced a fifth set but fell just short to the Georgian Court Lions (10-5, 6-1 CACC) in the GCU Wellness Center in Lakewood, N.J. on Tuesday night by a final of 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 17-25, 15-12.
The Rams trailed 2-0 in the match before winning the third and fourth sets to force a fifth.
-Senior Courtney Wensel notched a match-high 17 kills
-Junior Amber Johnson hit an astounding .500 behind 14 kills, two errors and 24 attempts
-Sophomore Cassandra Hickman recorded 13 kills with a .290 hitting percentage
-Sophomore Logan Dontell grabbed nine kills while hitting .300
-Junior Alexis Leddy led the Rams and the match with 22 digs
-Senior Alexandra Harrington notched a season-high 55 assists in the loss and added two kills and nine digs
-The Lions took the first two sets, 25-21, 25-23. Trailing by five in the second set, 19-14, the Rams clawed back in the second to get within one at 22-21, staying within a point up until set point.
-Jefferson found themselves behind in the third set before taking the lead at 21-20. A few late kills by Johnson kept the Rams ahead to force a fourth.
-The two squads were close early in the fourth set until the Rams pulled ahead 13-9. Jefferson extended that margin to stay comfortably ahead before winning 25-17 to force a fifth.
-The Rams were up 5-3 in the fifth before a GCU run put the Lions up, 7-5. Jefferson tied it at 9-9 and again at 10-10. Georgian Court regained the lead at 11-10 and kept it for the match to grab the win.
Jefferson returns to action at home Friday, Sept. 28 in a CACC matchup against Chestnut Hill. Action begins at 6 p.m. from the Gallagher Center.
