PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (12-7, 7-1 CACC) swept the Chestnut Hill Griffins (4-11, 2-5 CACC) on Friday evening from the Gallagher Center by a three-set final of 25-22, 25-16, 25-20.
-Senior Courtney Wensel led the match with 14 kills while hitting .367 in the win
-Sophomore Logan Dontell notched eight kills on 15 attempts with one error for a .467 hitting percentage.
-Junior Amber Johnson recorded six kills while sophomores Abigail Kress and Cassandra Hickman each had five
-Senior Alexandra Harrington was credited with 32 assists in the win
-Junior Alexis Leddy and sophomore Caitlin Crespo had 11 and 10 digs respectively to lead the squad
First set: The Rams hit .182 in the opening set as the Griffins played the Rams closely, matching every point. Jefferson went up 6-3 early before the Griffins tied it up 8-8. From there, no team led by more than one until a three-point run put Jefferson up 22-18 late.
Second set: Jefferson led 11-7 before a six-point run put the Rams up 18-11. Jefferson hit .278 in the second set to pull ahead 2-0 in the match.
Third set: The Rams found themselves up 7-3, 12-7 and 17-9 during the third set, keeping a comfortable edge. Chestnut Hill took seven of eight points late to get back within three at 22-19. A kill by Dontell and an attack error by the Griffins brought the set to 24-19 before a kill by Harrington sealed the win, 25-20.
The Rams return to action at home tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 29 with a conference matchup against the Concordia Clippers at noon from the Gallagher Center. Live stats and a free, live video stream will be available for the contest.
