PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team knocked off visiting Shippensburg, 9-0, in a non-conference match Friday afternoon on the Abraham Salaman Courts.
The Rams improve their overall record to 6-3. This is the third time that Philadelphia has won back-to-back matches. Shippensburg is 0-1.
The No. 2 doubles team of freshman Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and senior Sayre Limburg (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) got the match to a good start with an 8-0 win over Daniela Delgado and Kayla Strhol. The No. 1 duo of junior Olivia Amato (Hartford, Conn./Cheshire) and freshman Naia Bengoa (Caracas, Venezuela/San Ignacio de Loyola), and the No. 3 team of junior Sylvia Bennicelli (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and senior Elizabeth Verbits (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) added to the Philadelphia lead with 8-1 victories in their respective matches.
Bengoa was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Brittnee Buckley in a battle of No. 1s to open singles action. In the No. 2 match, Chung defeated Julia Saintz, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Anna Slomowitz (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hannah Wolfe in No. 4 action.
Freshman Mariana Teixeria Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) won her first collegiate match as she took out Emilie Luttman in the No. 6 match, 6-3, 6-0. Junior Magill Kurts (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) claimed the No. 3 flight over Delgado, 6-3, 6-3. Verbits earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Strohl in the No. 5 match.
Philadelphia will look for its first three-match winning streak when it hosts Division I La Salle on Monday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.
