SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team kept the perfect start to its 2014 season going by knocking off host Shippensburg in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.
Philadelphia moves its overall record to 4-0, while Shippensburg is 0-1.
The No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Amato (Hartford, Conn./Cheshire) and Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) and the No. 2 team of Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE) got the Rams out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of 8-0 victories.
Sylvia Bennicelli (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and Carly Ragan (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Twp.) picked up Philadelphia's third point with an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Chung at No. 2; Hamada at No. 3; and Amato at No. 4 were all 6-0, 6-0 winners.
Anna Slomowitz (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Bennicelli earned 6-2, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Arruda completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Julia Saintz in the No. 1 match.
Philadelphia returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 13 against visiting Georgian Court at noon.
