PHILADELPHIA – In its first home match of the season, the Philadelphia University women's tennis team put together an impressive performance in a 9-0 sweep of Shippensburg in a non-conference match Saturday morning on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts
The Rams improve to 2-0 overall, while the Raiders are 0-1.
Philadelphia's No. 2 doubles tandem of Anna Kudriavtceva (Yekaterinburg, Russia/Grammar School No. 13) and Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) got the team off to a fast start with an 8-0 win over McKensi Washabaugh and Emily Cox.
The No. 1 team of Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) and Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE) and the No. 3 duo of Usha Baublitz (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) followed up with 8-1 victories in their respective matches.
Chung quickly pushed the Philadelphia advantage to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Emily Cox at No. 3 singles. Hamada came through with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in the No. 4 flight over Emilie Cox to seal the match.
At No. 2 singles, Kudriavtceva picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win against Gabbie Bunder. Arruda knocked off Buckley 6-3, 6-1 in a showdown on No. 1 singles players. Sampaio was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Hannah Coath at No. 6. Baublitz completed the sweep by defeating Washabaugh 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 flight.
Philadelphia takes on Holy Family in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. on the Salaman Tennis Courts.
