Box Score Head Coach Mark Heineman's Philadelphia University baseball team
scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Rams'
rally fell one run short as they dropped a 7-6
decision to visiting East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday
afternoon. The loss, the third straight for the Rams, drops
the team to 1-11 overall on the season.
The Warriors (10-13) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second
inning on a pair of unearned runs off sophomore lefthander Brian
Rousseau, who went six innings in ultimately suffering his third
loss of the season. Heineman's team battled back in the
bottom of the third inning when junior outfielder Dan Ellmer
(pictured) connected on a two-run double with one out.
However, Ellmer was stranded at third as the teams remained tied at
2-2.
East Stroudsburg took the lead for good in the top of the fourth
inning when sophomore second baseman Brendan O'Malley was hit by a
pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home teammate Kevin Thompson,
a junior outfielder, with the go-ahead run. The Warriors
tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and added
two more in the top of the ninth on a two-run homerun off the bat
of junior outfielder Mike Bortz for what proved to be the winning
runs.
The Rams began their comeback with three straight walks to open
the bottom of the ninth and scored three times before Warriors'
sophomore pitcher Christian Saveri came in. With runners on
first and third with just one out, Saveri recorded two outs for his
team-high third save of the season, leaving the tying run on second
base.
Philadelphia University will look to end its slide when it
travels to the University of the Sciences on Thursday, March 27th,
for a a doubleheader with the Devils.
