Box Score The Philadelphia University baseball team tallied seven runs
from the seventh inning on, downing host Chestnut Hill College
9-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) game played Tuesday night at Hostelley Field in
North Wales, Pa.
Five players had two-hit performances for the Rams, who improve
to 13-18 overall and 11-6 in CACC games. Freshman
right-hander Jared Farbman remained unbeaten,
raising his record to 5-0, while sophomore closer Rob
Fisher worked the final two innings to earn his third save
of 2008.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore designated hitter
Mike Anderson gave Philadelphia University a
one-run lead in the second inning. The Griffins tied the affair,
1-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Rams then
reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, as a lead-off triple by
junior center fielder Devin Conroy resulted
in a run scored on an RBI ground out from sophomore second baseman
Tyler Mentzer.
In the seventh inning, Anderson led off by reaching on an error
by the Griffins' first baseman. A walk put two runners on and a
subsequent wild pitch moved them both into scoring position.
The next two Rams were retired before a walk to Conroy loaded
the bases for Tyler Mentzer. Mentzer came
through by socking a three-run double to left center,
putting Philadelphia University on top 5-1. The hosts
plated a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but the Rams
notched four runs in their final two at-bats to break open a tight
contest.
Farbman allowed just three runs while scattering six hits
and striking out five Griffins in the victory. Fisher picked
up the save, holding the Griffins scoreless over the final two
innings. The heart of the Rams' order (three through seven)
combined to go 10-for-22 (.455) with eight RBI; each batter
recording two hits.
The baseball team next hosts Wilmington University for a
key CACC doubleheader on Thursday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m.
on Alumni Field.
