Rams Take Another Extra Inning Contest, Sole Possession of CACC

Box Score

Sophomore John Pugh's RBI groundout in the bottom of the 11th inning staked the Philadelphia University baseball team to a key 6-5 win at Wilmington University on Tuesday afternoon as the Rams took sole possession of first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).  With four games remaining in the regular season, Head Coach Mark Heineman's team improves to 16-7 in conference play with the victory and 18-19 overall on the year.

Heineman's squad got off to a good start against the Wildcats, scoring twice in the top of the first inning as junior Rob Fisher (pictured) picked up an RBI single and then scored on an error.  The Rams added another run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 3-0 on an RBI single off the bat of senior outfielder JungMin Lee.  After both team's exchanged runs in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, the Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 advantage.

With the Rams down to their final out in the top of the ninth, Fisher connected on a dramatic solo homerun to tie the score at 5-5, giving Heineman's team new life.  Neither team threatened in the tenth inning, but in the 11th inning, the Rams loaded the bases on a single and two walks, setting the stage for Pugh's heroics, which scored Fisher from third with the eventual game-winning run.  In the bottom of the 11th, senior Zach Mentzer earned his second save of the season, allowing a one-out single before inducing Wilmington into a game-ending double play.

Pugh earned the victory on the mound by virtue of his scoreless 10th inning, improving to 2-2 on the season.  Fisher and sophomore second baseman Tyler Mentzer registered three hits apiece for the Rams with Fisher scoring three times and collecting two RBI.
