Day One Recap from caccathletics.org
Philadelphia University
has won their first game in the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament, as the Rams scored early and
often to take a 13-0 decision from Felician
College. Below is the text (and some pictures) from the
running commentary that was posted on www.philaurams.com during
today's game from Frawley Stadium.
PREGAME
It's a 69-degree, cloudy day here in Wilmington,
Del. for the start of the CACC Baseball Tournament.
Second-seded Caldwell College just defeated number three seed
Dominican College 6-5 after a walk-off home run in the bottom of
the 10th inning.
The extra frame required in Game 1 of the tournament has pushed
back the start of the top-seeded Rams game vs. fourth-seeded
Felician College just a few minutes, estimated to begin around 3:30
p.m.
Check this space often as the day progresses for updates on the
game, the Rams first appearance in the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference postseason.
TOP OF THE
FIRST
After yielding a lead-off walk, freshman right-hander Jared Farbman
settled in and got a strikeout, a soft grounder to first and
another "K" to retire the side as the Golden Falcons leave a man
on. It's scoreless through one half inning with the Rams
coming to bat.
BOTTOM OF THE
FIRST
JungMin Lee leads off with a single to right field, and he is
promptly sacrificed to second base on a textbook bunt by Zach
Mentzer. Lee then steals third without a throw from the
Felician catcher. The Rams are in scoring position with Tyler
Mentzer at the plate. Tyler Mentzer pops out to the shortstop
for the second out; but sophomore Rob Fisher comes through with a
base hit up the middle to bring home Lee with the game's first
run. Kyle Noonan taps a grounder to third for the final out
of the inning. The Rams lead 1-0, through one.
TOP OF THE
SECOND
The Golden Falcons have their first hit of the game as Hector Bello
leads off the second with a single, but he is caught stealing
second on a nice throw by senior catcher Jason Hartley.
Farbman then gets his third strikeout of the game and a grounder to
short to end the inning after facing the minimum three
batters. It's still 1-0 Philadelphia through one and a half.
BOTTOM OF THE
SECOND
Devin Conroy smacks a double just inside the third base bag and
Mike Anderson follows with another double; his went to right-center
and the Rams are now ahead 2-0, with no outs in the top of the
second. Jason Hartley sacrifices Anderson to third and
Anthony DiFrancesco lines one right back to Golden Falcon starter
Al Jardine. Two down, and then JungMin Lee lines one to left
center to bring home Anderson and it's now 3-0 Philadelphia.
Zach Mentzer grounds out softly to third to end the inning, but not
before two more runs make it 3-0 Rams.
TOP OF THE
THIRD
Farbman gets the Felician lead-off hitter to tap out to first
baseman Fisher, and Farbman covers the bag for the first out.
(A lot of ground balls today and a lot of quick at-bats; may be a
good thing as there might be some wet weather heading up from the
Chesapeake Bay early this evening). Farbman issues his second
walk of the day and then picks off baserunner Anthony Spina; the
freshman then gets his fourth strikeout of the afternoon and it's
three-up, three-down again. 3-0 Rams through two and a half.
BOTTOM OF THE
THIRD
Tyler Mentzer grounds out to open the third, but Rob Fisher hits a
double to deep right center out of the reach of Felician's center
fielder. Fisher and Lee each are 2-for-2 on the day as the
Rams continue to get hits. Kyle Noonan flies out to left and
it's two down with Fisher still on second. Devin Conroy is
now 2-for-2 as well as the junior hits his second double of
the day to drive in Fisher with another two-out run and it's 4-0
Philadelphia University. Picthing change for the Golden
Falcons and it's John Calise coming on in relief of
Jardine. Mike Anderson pokes one to left to bring in
Conroy, making it 5-0 Rams. Hartley grounds out to the
shortstop who gets Anderson on the force at second to end the
inning, still 5-0 Philadelphia.
TOP OF THE
FOURTH
After a Rams error to open the inning allowed the Golden
Falcon a lead-off baserunner, Farbman easily retired the side,
maintaining his one-hitter through four innings, with Rams
ahead 5-0.
BOTTOM OF THE
FOURTH
DiFrancesco opens with a base on balls, followed by Lee's third
base hit of the day. Another Zach Mentzer sacrifice has the
Rams positioned with runners on second and third, one out.
Tyler Mentzer softly singles to bring home another run, it's 6-0
Rams, runners on first and third. Rob Fisher taps one back to
the picther, and is thrown out a first, but not before Tyler
Mentzer advances to second. With two runners in scoring
position, it's Kyle Noonan at the plate with two down. Noonan
hits one sharply up the middle, it's gathered by the diving
Felician shortstop, but the infield single gets both runners
home. Conroy strikes out to end the inning, but three more
runs make it 8-0 Philadelphia through four complete.
TOP OF THE
FIFTH
Farbman notches his sixth "K" of the game but Hartley bobbles the
pitch and throws to Anderson to make the first out official.
A base hit and a hit batsman put runners on first and second for
the Golden Falcons, but a 4-6-3 double play ends the inning as the
Rams defense, best in the conference statistically, comes through
again to preserve the 8-0 lead through four and a half innings of
play. The weather is holding and the game will be official
shortly, regardless.
BOTTOM OF THE
FIFTH
Anderson leads off with a walk, but is forced out at second as
Hartley grounds into a double play. DiFrancesco grounds out
to end the inning as the Rams go down in order for the first time
today, but still lead comfortably, 8-0.
With the game seemingly in control, I'm going to head down
to field level to snap some photos from the game while the weather
is still halfway decent. So perhaps more pictures and
less text for an inning or two...stay tuned, Rams' fans!
TOP OF THE
SIXTH
No runs, no hits for Felician.
BOTTOM OF THE
SIXTH
The Rams plate one run as JungMin Lee has his fourth hit of the
game and he's driven home on a fielder's choice by Rob Fisher
(shown below) to make it 9-0 Rams through six complete
innings. The wind is picking up and the skies are darkening.
TOP OF THE
SEVENTH
Farbman is cruising along with a two-hitter and the Rams head into
the seventh inning stretch in command, still ahead 9-0.
BOTTOM OF THE
SEVENTH
Mike Anderson is now 3-for-3 with a walk, he's reached base in all
four of his plate appearances with two RBI to boot, he's a lead-off
baserunner in the seventh, and he's followed by Jason Hartley who
was hit by a picth. First and second with no outs for
DiFrancesco. DiFran reached on a dropped pop-up by the
Felician SS. Bases are loaded for J-Lee, who is seeking his
fifth hit of the day. Lee reaches on an error, which opens
the floodgates for four more Philadelphia runs and they lead it
13-0 through seven innings. In the inning, Lee scored his
fourth run of the afternoon, which ties a CACC Tournament
single-game record.
Dan Wothers replaces Kyle Noonan
and goes into center field with Devin Conroy shifting to right to
open the eighth inning as Head Coach Mark Heineman makes a
defensive switch in order to give Noonan the rest of the day off as
he'll probably picth tomorrow's game.
TOP OF THE EIGHTH
Farbman is in complete control of the game, with nine
strikeouts on 111 pitches (79 strikes, 32 balls), he's yielded just
three Felician hits as the Rams maintain their 13-0 lead through
seven and a half innings.
BOTTOM OF THE
EIGHTH
The Rams go quietly, just the second inning today
where they didn't score a run in their turn at bat.
Still 13-0 and Farbman remains in the contest looking for the
complete game.
TOP OF THE NINTH
Farbman gets his 10th strikeout and finishes his gem of a complete
game with 129 pitches thrown, 88 of them for strikes, and the ample
run support provided early and often propels the Rams into the
winners' bracket; they'll face Caldwell at 12:00 noon tomorrow at
Wilson Field in New Castle, Del. Felician meets Dominican in
Game 3 of the CACC Tournament, to start here at Frawley Stadium in
about 25 minutes.
