Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University baseball team (3-14, 0-1 CACC) was swept 6-4 and 8-7 in a non-conference doubleheader to the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans (5-10) on Sunday afternoon.

In game one the Rams knocked out seven hits, getting all four of their runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead as senior outfielder Dan Ellmer (Trenton, NJ/ Nottingham) doubled in a run.  PhilaU junior pitcher/first baseman Rob Fisher (Langhorne, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) then reached on an error by the STAC shortstop which scored two runs, and freshman pitcher/first baseman Garrett Buehler (Harleysville, PA/ Souderton) singled in another run to complete the rally.

However, the Spartans scored two in the sixth with a back-to-back double and triple, and then added another in the seventh as PhilaU sophomore hurler Kevin McGovern (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) walked in the final run.  McGovern went 6.1 innings for the Rams, allowing six earned runs and striking out seven, while STAC's Matkovich had the win and the save for the Spartans.

The second game of the day featured a late PhilaU rally in the final inning.  The Rams were trailing 4-0 in the top of the third, but junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic) roped a triple into right field to score three runs and make it 4-3.

The Spartans added two more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh off an RBI single to lead 7-3.  But the Rams exploded for four runs off two hits, including two runs scored off wild pitches.  Unfortunately, the PhilaU rally was cut short as sophomore catcher Matt Minakowski (Roslyn, PA/ Abington) struck out looking to complete STAC's 8-7 victory.

Fisher had the loss on the mound for the Rams in five innings pitched, allowing six runs (none earned) and striking out three.  STAC's Tyler Savin had the win in 3.1 innings, allowing three runs and two hits.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday, March 25th as they host Chestnut Hill College at1:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
