Team effort lifts Rams to a 7-6 win over Millersville

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team used a season-high 16 hits and a solid relief appearance by Joseph Capparelli to knock off visiting Millersville, 7-6, on Alumni Field Tuesday afternoon.

Capparelli earned his first win of the season by scattering four hits and allowing just one unearned run in 4.1 innings of relief. He struck out three Marauders.

Offensively center fielder Rick Reigner and third baseman C.J. Wallowitch paced the Rams (3-5) with three hits each. Left fielder Ken McCormick, designated hitter Evan High, catcher TJ Burgmann and first baseman Jordan Force all added two hits.

Philadelphia plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back from a 5-4 deficit and take the lead for good. Reigner started the rally with a double to left center and scored when shortstop Hunter Greenwood, the next hitter, singled back through the box. With two outs right fielder Ryan Shellock doubled home Greenwood to put the Rams ahead 6-5. Wallowitch was responsible for the eventual game-winning RBI when he knocked in Shellock with a base hit.

Reliever Tad Barton (2-2) was the losing pitcher for Millersville (6-4) after surrender three runs on four hits in one inning.

Millersville had two-hit games from shortstop Mike August, center fielder Jeff Heisey and left fielder Kurt Seiders.

The Marauders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by second baseman Evan King, Seiders and August.

Philadelphia came back to score two runs in the third and fourth innings to grab a 4-3 lead. Millersville came back with by plating two runs in the fifth.

Philadelphia welcomes Bloomsburg to Alumni Field for a non-conference game Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m.
