Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team dropped a high-scoring 11-9 affair to visiting Bloomsburg University in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.
Both teams pounded out 12 hits each. The Huskies (5-4) were able to take advantage of eight walks, while Philadelphia (3-6) walked twice.
Right fielder Ryan Shellock and first baseman Jordan Force both went 3-for-4 with one RBI at the plate for the Rams. Shellock also scored three times. Second baseman Kevin Giambri and center fielder Rick Reigner added two hits each.
Second baseman Keith Meyer, third baseman Jarrod Kramer, designated hitter Paul Rosa and center fielder Brad Smith all had two hits a piece for Bloomsburg. One of Kramer's two hits was a solo home run to left field to open the third inning.
Huskies' reliever Matt Dean earned the victory after going four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, and striking out six. Nick Donofry got the game's final out and earned the save after getting out of a bases-loaded jam.
Philadelphia's Rob Spragis suffered the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Trailing 4-2, the Rams put their first three hitters on bases to start a big rally in the fourth. Giambri singled to center and plated Shellock from third. Two batters later Reigner was plunked by a pitch to send Force home. The final two runs came with two outs on a fielding error on a ball hit by left fielder Ken McCormick that put Philadelphia ahead 6-4.
Bloomsburg came back with bases loaded walks from right fielder Josh Schroeder and Meyer, and a RBI groundout by shortstop Tim Ravel in the fifth inning to take the lead back at 7-6.
The Huskies broke the game open in the seventh with three runs, two scoring on a single by Ravel to open up an 11-7 gap.
Philadelphia put together a rally in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. Reigner walked with one out and McCormick drew a two-out walk. Then, catcher TJ Burgmann, Shellock and Force were all hit by a pitch to force home Reigner and McCormick. That would be all Philadelphia could muster.
Philadelphia goes right back to work with a pair of games on Saturday, March 10 at Alumni Field. The Rams get a second crack at the Huskies at 10 a.m. and will take on Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m.
