Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team suffered a pair of tough 3-2 losses to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests to Caldwell Sunday afternoon on Alumni Field.
In the nightcap, the Rams (6-23, 0-7 CACC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. First baseman Jordan Force scored the first run on an error and right fielder Ryan Shellock drove home the second run with a double to right-center field.
The lead stood up until the seventh when the Cougars (6-14, 6-1 CACC) got back-to-back RBI singles from center fielder Jorge Ynoa and left fielder Andrew Nunez.
In the ninth, Caldwell put runners at the corners with one out. Right fielder Ryan O'Donnell, the runner at first, was caught in a rundown on a pickoff attempt by pitcher Russell Trojan. Nunez, the runner at third, broke for home and was able to score.
Philadelphia was able to get a pair of runners on base, but couldn't push the tying run home.
Left fielder Ken McCormick and Shellock recorded a pair of hits for Philadelphia. Caldwell's Steve Dodd went 3-for-4.
Rams' starter Sawyer Brown pitched well, striking out a career-high nine batters in 6+ innings of work. He allowed two runs on five hits and got a no-decision. Trojan took the loss after giving up an unearned run in three innings and fanning two.
Matt Cook was the winning pitcher by tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Caldwell put together a 3-0 lead in game one with single runs in the third, fifth and seventh. First baseman Adolfo Lopez and Dodd had RBIs singles, while Ynoa recorded a sacrifice fly.
McCormick got Philadelphia on the board in the eighth when he doubled and came around to score on an error made on a ball hit by center fielder Rick Reigner.
The Rams loaded the bases in the ninth with one out. McCormick drove in a one run with a fielder's choice, but the team couldn't push home a second run in the inning.
Philadelphia's designated hitter Jake Madnick and Lopez had three hits each for their respective teams. Each time had nine hits.
Craig Gourley threw six shutout innings and struck out eight to earn the win. Robert Bennetti recorded the save after allowing two runs, one earned, in the final three innings.
David Lerro suffered the loss. Lerro gave up three runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work and fanned six batters.
Philadelphia hosts West Chester in a non-conference game Tuesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
