Baseball walks off with 4-3 victory over Chestnut Hill

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Junior second baseman John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College HS) was hit by the first pitch he saw with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to score freshman pinch runner Michael Treglia (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and give the Philadelphia University baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over Chestnut Hill in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener on Wednesday.

Senior first baseman Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill E.) capped off a 4-for-5 day with a lead-off double to start the 10th. After Treglia came in to pinch run for Bohus, junior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College HS) was intentionally walked. Attempting to sacrifice the runners up one base, junior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) popped his bunt attempt up, but the ball hit the ground and came to a stop on the third-base line to load the bases for Sczepanski.

Philadelphia (4-13-1, 1-0 CACC) scored three times in the seventh inning on two-out RBI singles from sophomore right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Bohus, and Burgmann.

The Griffins' (9-10, 2-1 CACC) Brian Happ sent the game to extra innings with a base hit to right field in the top of the ninth.

Joseph Crane had a RBI single in the first, and Taylor Steen recorded a sacrifice fly in in the third allowed the Griffins to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Junior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School), junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), junior third baseman Chris Pelaez (Miami, Fla./Sunset), McCormick, and Force all finished with two hits for the Rams, who finished with 15 hits.

Michael McLaughlin and Happ both had two hits for Chestnut Hill.

Senior reliever Russell Trojan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) was the winning pitcher after throwing a scoreless tenth inning. Freshman starter Cory Dean fanned five over the first eight innings.

Dominic Raia III took the loss.

Philadelphia welcomes Lincoln (Pa.) to Alumni Field for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
