Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team cranked out 19 hits to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Lincoln (Pa.) on Thursday at Alumni Field. The Rams took game one 6-2 and then came up with an 11-3 win in the second game, which was called after five innings due to darkness.
With the sweep, Philadelphia improves its overall record to 6-13-1. The Rams have now won three straight games since ending the 2010 season with five consecutive wins.
Lincoln is now 0-13.
In the opener, freshman starter pitcher Desmond Drummond (Philadelphia, Pa./GAMP) turned in a strong performance in his first collegiate start as he threw a complete-game four-hitter. He fanned five in his seven innings of action.
After trading runs in the first two innings, the Rams' offense gave Drummond all the run support he would need as they scored four times in the bottom of the fourth.
Junior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama's (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) second hit of the game, a one-out single to left, snapped the deadlock as two runs came home. One hitter later, sophomore shortstop Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) doubled home Yoshiyama to make the score 4-1. Greenwood eventually scored the fourth run of the inning on a balk.
Philadelphia tacked on one more run in the sixth on a RBI groundout from sophomore right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury).
Richard Holguin went 2-for-3 for Lincoln.
Philadelphia jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a McCormick single in the first, and a Yoshiyama RBI fielder's choice and a Greenwood single in the second.
The Lions came back to tie the game up with three runs in the top half of the third inning.
In the bottom half of the third, the Rams' went off as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight times on seven hits. Philadelphia was also helped out by two Lincoln errors.
Junior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) started the scoring with a two-RBI double to left center to give the Rams a 5-3 lead. Later in the inning, Yoshiyama, Greenwood, junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), McCormick, and senior first baseman Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill E.) recorded consecutive RBI singles to pad the advantage.
Freshman reliever Lou Karcanes (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) earned the win as he threw a scoreless fourth inning, including a strikeout. Junior starter Rob Spragis (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks S.) went three innings, allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three.
McCormick finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Greenwood, Reigner, and Force each had two hits.
Philadelphia continues its homestand with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday, March 23 at noon.
