Early offensive barrage helps Rams knock off Chestnut Hill, 6-4

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team scored five times with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and made those runs stand up over the final eight innings to defeat Chestnut Hill, 6-4, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game Monday afternoon on Alumni Field.

Junior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College HS) came up with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run double to right-center field that plated junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and sophomore shortstop Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett). One hitter later, junior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkioment) came through with a single, and was combined with a throwing error, to bring two more runs home and doubled the Philadelphia (12-14-1, 7-1 CACC) lead. Force would score the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

The Rams tacked on the sixth run on a Greenwood sacrifice bunt hat brought home junior third baseman Chris Pelaez (Miami, Fla./Sunset), who doubled to open the single and went to third on a groundout.

Chestnut Hill (9-11, 2-2 CACC) got on the board in the seventh thanks to a Brendan Looby single. The Griffins put together a serious threat in the eighth as the first six hitters reached base on three singles, two walks, and a suicide squeeze to score three times and cut the gap to 6-4. Reliever Stephen Uhlak (Ocean Gate, N.J./Central Reg.), the third pitcher of the inning, stopped the bleeding as he induced a strike out, a fly out, and a foul out in succession with the bases loaded.

Freshman starter Cory Dean (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) turned in a strong seven innings of work to earn his second win of the year (2-3). He struck out six, while giving up one run on nine hits. Freshman closer Luke Floer (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem) threw a perfect ninth to record his fourth save of the year.

Dominic Raia allowed six runs—four earned—on nine hits and struck out three in a complete game loss.

Reigner extended his hitting streak to 12 as he had three of Philadelphia's nine hits.

Brian Happ, Joseph Crane. Michael McLaughlin, and Looby recorded two hits each for Chestnut Hill.

Philadelphia returns to the field for a non-conference home game against East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
