Box Score 2 NEWARK, N.J. – Freshman Casey O'Donnell (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and senior Russell Trojan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) turned in a pair of strong pitching performances to help the Philadelphia University baseball team earn a pair of victories, 1-0 and 3-1, over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Bloomfield Saturday afternoon at Westside Park.
With the sweep, Philadelphia improves its overall record to 17-23-1 and its CACC record in 10-7. Bloomfield goes to 5-26 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
In the 1-0 game one victory, O'Donnell fanned a career-best 11 hitters, while scattering just four hits, over seven innings. O'Donnell retired 11 of 12 batters his faced from the first through the fourth.
Sophomore reliever Stephen Uhlak (Ocean Gate, N.J./Central Reg.) entered in the eighth and threw two scoreless innings to earn his first save.
The game's only run came in the top of the first inning when junior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) scored on an error on a ball hit by senior first baseman Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill).
Junior second baseman John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College HS) had two of Philadelphia's four hits.
Anthony Koban went 2-for-4 for the Deacons. Francesco Scudiero was tough on the mound as well, striking out four and allowing just the unearned run in a complete-game loss.
Trojan took the ball in game two and turned in six innings of one-run ball on six hits and fanned one. He gave the ball to junior Joseph Capparelli (Miami, Fla./Miami-Sunset) in the seventh. Capparelli kept the Deacons off the board in his two innings of work. Freshman closer Luke Floer (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem) threw a perfect ninth for his CACC-leading seventh save.
With the game tied at one in the seventh, junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) delivered a two-out, two-run double—that scored Yoshiyama and junior third baseman Chris Pelaez (Miami, Fla./Miami-Sunset)—to give the Rams a two-run lead.
Yoshiyama, Reigner, and Sczepanski all had two hits for the Rams. Sophomore right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had a RBI fielder's choice in the opening inning.
Koban came up with another 2-for-4 game for Bloomfield and scored its only run on a Reyvis Rivas single in the fourth.
Luis Nova took the loss after surrendering three runs—two earned—on seven hits in seven innings.
Philadelphia returns to Alumni Field to take on Kutztown in its regular season home finale on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Rams will honor seniors Michael Ross (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown), Trojan, and Bohus.
