Box Score 2 BEL AIR, Md. – The Philadelphia University slugged out a season-high 18 hits in a 10-1 game two victory to earn a doubleheader split with the University of the Sciences Monday afternoon at Harford Community College. The Devils squeaked by the Rams to take the first game.
Senior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) went 2-for-5 at the plate in the opener and 2-for-3 in the nightcap to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Yoshiyama scored the first run of the second game when sophomore right fielder Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) to deep right center field in the bottom of the first inning. Junior designated hitter Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) drove in Garza with an infield single.
Philadelphia (2-6) tacked on more three runs in the second on a RBI single by freshman second baseman David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth), a RBI triple by junior third baseman Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett), and a RBI groundout off the bat of junior shortstop Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United).
The lead grew to 8-0 in the third thanks to RBI base hits from senior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and senior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and a Devils' error.
After USciences (1-1) got on the board with a run in the fifth on a single by TJ Maiorino, junior catcher John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton Reg.) and McTaggart produced RBI singles in the sixth to make it a 10-1 game.
Garza finished the game 3-for-5, was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, and scored three times. Brocious contributed four singles, while McCormick added three hits in four at-bats.
Matt Miniconzi had two hits for USciences
The Rams' pitching staff, led by junior starter Stephen Dickerson (Columbus, Ohio/Danbury), held the Devils to just three hits. Dickerson allowed one run on just two hits and fanned two in five innings to earn his first win with Philadelphia (1-1).
CJ Hertz took the loss as he surrendered eight runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings.
The Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening game. Patrick Hiester came through with a bases-loaded two-out double to right in the first to bring in the Devils' first three runs. Miniconzi singled in the fourth run in the fourth inning.
Philadelphia closed the gap to 4-3 on a senior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College High School) RBI single in the seventh and two-run double off the bat of Garza in the eighth.
Both teams score three times in the ninth inning. Trevor Datz had a two-run double in the inning for USciences. Greenwood and Reigner had one RBI each for Philadelphia. Garza came up with the tying run at third and the winning run at second, but flew out to right to end the game.
The Rams outhit the Devils 9-8. Force had two hits in four at-bats for Philadelphia. Hiester went 2-for-4.
Pablo Matos earned the win with six shutout innings of work and four strikeouts. Sophomore starter Cory Dean (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) suffered the loss (0-2). He gave up four runs on five hits in four innings and fanned two.
Philadelphia heads to Millersville for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 1 at noon.
