Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – First baseman Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) went 4-for-9 from the Philadelphia University baseball team as the Rams were swept by Post in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, 5-0 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
GAME ONE
The Eagles' (8-9, 4-0 CACC) Zach Batchelor tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out five batters. He ended the game by retiring 12 straight batters.
Philadelphia (6-8, 3-5 CACC) put together a threat in the fifth inning as third baseman David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) started the frame with a leadoff walk and stolen base. Center fielder Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) moved McTaggart to third with a fly out to right field. However, Batchelor got a ground ball right back to him and a strike out to strand McTaggart at third.
In the bottom half of the inning, Post broke through with the game's first run thanks to a RBI groundout by Joey Picone that scored Luke Leonardi, who led off the inning with a single.
One inning later, Dylan Pastor singled home Don Walsh and Leonardi brought home two runs with a double to push the advantage to 4-0. With runners at first and third in the eighth, the Eagles successfully pulled off a double steal that resulted in Brendon Emigholz coming home for the fifth run.
Wells went 2-for-4 to lead the Philadelphia offense. Brian McKenna, Alex Wright, Pastor, and Leonardi all had two hits each for the Eagles. Post had 11 hits as a team.
Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took the loss, allowing one run on five hits and fanning four in five innings. Cory Dean (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) struck out four and gave up three runs in three innings of relief.
GAME TWO
Philadelphia took a 4-0 lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning. With catcher John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton) at third and Garza at second, designated hitter Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Adington) ripped a one-out single to right-center field to send both runners home and give the Rams a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, second baseman Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) doubled to right field, allowing Quaranta to score the team's third run.
Gonzalez manufactured the final run of the inning as he strayed too far off of second base and drew a throw from McKenna. Instead of going back to second, Gonzalez broke for third and McKenna's throw sailed into center field, which made Gonzalez able to easily score on the play.
Post got a run back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Maxime Robillard sacrifice fly.
The Eagles plated four runs in the home half of the fifth to grab a 5-4 lead. Post got its first two hitters on base with a walk and a single, and Joey Picone successfully bunted them both into scoring position. Erik Rodriguez made the play pay off with a single through the left side of the Ram infield to send home Emigholz and Wright. With the bases loaded and one out, Robillard hit a ground ball to short. Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) flipped the ball to Gonzalez at second for one out, but Gonzalez's relay to first was high and allowed two runs to score and put the Eagles in front, 5-4.
Philadelphia managed to get a runner as far as second base in the seventh and the ninth, but can't get the tying run across.
Led by two hits from Wells, Philadelphia outhit Post, 9-6.
Troy Terzi tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, including four strikeouts, to record the win. Nick Horner (Easton, Md./St. Michael's) allowed one unearned run and took the loss. Philadelphia reliever Steve Hatala (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) fanned a career-high five batters in 3.2 innings.
Philadelphia next takes the field against West Chester in a non-conference game at West Chester on Tuesday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
