Baseball falls twice to No. 20 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was swept was No. 20 Millersville, 10-4 and 14-2, in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Cooper Park.

GAME ONE
Millersville (33-9) built up a 9-0 lead with a run in the first, five in the second, one in third, and two more in the fourth. During the second inning, the Marauders pushed four across with two outs. Chas McCormick had a single, John Brogan drew a walk, and Jeremy Musser completed the inning with a two-RBI base hit.

Tyler McDonald had a sacrifice fly and Dan Neff came through with a RBI triple in the fourth.

Philadelphia (12-20) closed the gap to 9-4 with a four-run fifth inning. After Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) reached safely on a one-out double, Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) slugged his first career home run over the right center field fence for Philadelphia's first two runs of the afternoon. Later in the inning, Jake Madnick (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) came through with the bases loaded with a two-out, two-run base hit to right field to plate Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) and Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander).

Millersville pushed one final run across in the fifth on a wild pitch.

Seven Millersville players combined for 12 hits, five had two hits. Goetz led the Philadelphia seven-hit attack with two in four at bats.

The Marauders' Stephen Muscovitch threw four shutout innings and struck out five to get the win.

GAME TWO
Millersville got itself out to a 10-0 lead after four innings of play. After scoring twice in the first, Dan Stoltzfus doubled the advantage to 4-0 with a third inning two-run home run. The Marauders plated six runs in the fourth, two on a David Summerfield triple and three more on a Musser home run.

Garza scored the Rams' first run of the contest on a fifth-inning single by Lou Karcanes (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock), who had two of Philadelphia's five hits. One inning later, David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) connected on his first homer of the season, a solo shot to right center, for Philadelphia's second run.

Millersville plated four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A.J. Hammond, Luke Emiling, and Kurt Seiders had RBI hits, and Tyler McDonald recorded a run producing ground out.

Millersville had 12 hits, two each from Summerfield and Stoltzfus.

Logan Grant struck out four and allowed two hits over four shutout innings to get the win.

Philadelphia takes on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Chestnut Hill in its final home game of the year on Tuesday, April 21 at 3 p.m.
