Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's tennis team made a big statement as it knocked off previously unbeaten Roberts Wesleyan, 6-3, for its first win of the 2016-17 season Sunday morning in the Legacy Youth Tennis Center.
Philadelphia evens its overall record at 1-1, while Roberts Wesleyan is now 8-1.
The Rams got off to a fast start with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Oskar Haedicke (Iserlohn, Germany/Gymnasium An der Stenner Iserlohn) and Joseph Sison (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) recorded their first win as a duo with an 8-2 triumph over Guilherme Plentz de Liz and Dennis Barlotta in the No. 2 match. Sean DiBlasio (Livingston, Texas/Livingston) and Jacobo Atri (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Hebreo Monte Sinai, AC) gave the Rams the lead, defeating Paul Langbroek and Dustin Eshleman at No. 3, 8-6.
In singles action, Haedicke and James Pollard (Mechanicsville, Va/Hanover) were straight set winners, while Sison and Atri had to overcome an opening set defeat to earn a win.
After battling Langbroek for a 7-5 opening set victory, Haedicke cruised in the second set 6-2 to earn the win at No. 2 singles. Pollard picked up his win in the No. 6 match by a 6-3, 6-4 score against Mathew Cruz.
Atri was edged out in a tiebreak in the opening set against Plentz de Liz 6-7 (5-7), but bounced back in a big way to claim the No. 4 singles match, winning the last two sets 6-1, 6-0.
Sison went down 1-0 as Jose Carrillo won the first set of the No. 5 match 3-6. He came back to win the second set 6-4 and the 10-point tiebreak to win the match 10-5.
