Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team wrapped up its four-game series against Le Moyne with two losses, 7-3 and 7-5, in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon on Alumni Field.
GAME ONE
In the opener, Le Moyne wasted no time getting its offense going, scoring three times in the first inning. Nick Place provided the early run support with a three-run home run over the left field fence to bring home Brian Cox and Gabe Levanti, who doubled and singled, respectively.
After the Dolphins added a fourth run in the inning, the Rams clawed back with single runs in the second and third to cut the Le Moyne lead in half.
Dan Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) got Philadelphia on the board, driving a sacrifice fly to center field to plate that scored Mike Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock)—who started the second inning with a double. An inning later, Philadelphia took advantage of a Le Moyne error to record its second run. With runners at first and third, Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) broke for second base, drawing a throw from Dolphin catcher Trey West. West airmailed the throw into center field, allowing Christopher Lorenzo (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep)—who led off the inning with a base hit—to easily score from third.
Le Moyne came back by scoring a single run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to slowly increase its advantage to 7-2. Pat Wright produced a RBI double in the fifth, JT Pittman scored on a throwing error an inning later, and West knocked in the final run on a fielder's choice.
The Rams got one back in the last of the inning with a Garza sacrifice fly, capped a 2-for-3 game for Philadelphia's designated hitter.
Along with Garza, Andres Valbuena (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy), Lorenzo, and Melendez had two-hits games for the Rams—who outhit the Dolphins 11-10. Place and Pittman finished up 2-for-3 for Le Moyne.
The Dolphins' Alex Dihonis scattered 10 hits over 6.0 innings and struck out four to get the win. Philadelphia's Jonathan Gottschall (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 6.0 innings.
GAME TWO
The Rams fell behind 2-0 in the early going, but got their offense going by scoring twice in the third and two more times in the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead.
With one out in the third, Klusman and David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) attempted a double steal, forcing a Dolphin error that allowed both runners to score. An inning later, Garza came through with a one-out single to score Lorenzo to put Philadelphia in the lead and Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) posted a two-out hit that scored Garza, who set Wells up by stealing second and going to third on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne broke the game open with five one-out runs in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead, 7-4. Josiah Gray started the rally with a single to left to pull the visitors within one. After Gray swiped second base, he scored the tying run on a Tim Corapi base hit to left.
Back-to-back singles by Phillip Jasik and Brett Charbonneau gave the Dolphins a 6-4 advantage. Levanti was responsible for the final run, stroking a double to center field for the seventh run.
The Rams got one run back in the seventh on a two-out pinch-hit single by Michael Taffe (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge).
Matt Acomb picked up the win with 2.0 innings of relief, recording two strikeouts. Brett Chupka (White Haven, Pa./The Hun School) suffered the loss.
