Men's tennis knocks off Gwynedd-Mercy 7-2

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season with a 7-2 triumph over visiting Gwynedd-Mercy University Saturday afternoon on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts.

The Rams (2-4), playing in their first match 29 days, opened up a 2-1 lead in doubles action.

Vincent Breer (Heidelberg, Germany/English's Institut Heidelberg) and Jacobo Atri  (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Hebreo Monte Sinai, AC) recorded their first win as a duo, defeating the Griffins No. 1 team of Peter Brzezinski and Joshua Carson, 8-2. Sean DiBlasio (Livingston, Texas/Livingston) and James Pollard (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) were victorious for the first time after knocking off Brian Irwin and Kylil Curry 8-3 in the No. 2 flight.

Celso de Vera Rehberger (Oviedo, Spain/Santa Maria del Naranco) and Luis Molina Megias (Gran Canaria, Spain/Atlantic School Garoe) opened singles play with 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. De Vera Rehberger won his second match of the year, while Megias tallied his first.

Pollard improved to 4-1 overall with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Carson. In his first match at No. 4 of the season, Juan Velosa (Bogota, Colombia/Gimnasio Campestre San Rafael) defeated Curry, 6-4, 6-0.  Ryan Schaffer (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) made his singles debut and came away with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph against Blaine Grishak.

Philadelphia gets right back to work with a match against Salem International on Sunday, March 20 at 8 a.m. at the Legacy Youth Tennis Education Center.
