Baseball splits at Nyack in CACC finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POMONA, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University baseball team closed out Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a split of its conference doubleheader against Nyack College Thursday afternoon at Credit Union Park. The Rams pulled away for a 4-2 win in the opener, but dropped the nightcap 3-1.

Philadelphia is now 16-25 overall and ends its conference slate with a 10-12 record. The Rams have a place in the CACC Tournament locked up but their opponent for the May 6 contest is still undetermined.

With the first game tied at two in the top of the sixth, Philadelphia put together a one-out rally to push two runs across the plate to take a 4-2 lead. After Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) worked a walk off of Nyack starter Jack Kelly, Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) ripped a triple—his second of the season—into the right-field corner to bring home the go-ahead run. Dan Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) followed up the Wells triple by stroking a RBI single to left and increasing the lead to two.

The Philadelphia pitching duo of Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Quaranta took over the game as they combined to no-hit Nyack over the final four innings and secure the win. O'Donnell went the first seven, allowing one earned run on five hits, and struck out one. Quaranta came on in the eighth to record two strike outs and hit a batter to lead off the ninth. O'Donnell now has four wins, while Quaranta earned his second save.

Both teams took advantage of errors to score single runs in the fourth inning. Christopher Lorenzo (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Richard Joa (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) to second. First baseman Ryan Kahl threw to second in an attempt to gun down Joa, but the throw ended up in the outfield and Joa came around to score the game's first run. Nyack took advantage of a bad O'Donnell pickoff attempt, which allowed Jesse Barton to go from first to third, to tie the game on a Luke Kelly single.

Andres Valbuena (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) put Philadelphia back in the lead with a two-out single in the fifth. The Warriors came right back to even the game during their turn in the fifth on a Carlos Pino RBI groundout.

In the second game, Nyack did all of its damage in the bottom of the first inning. Pino opened the scoring with a one-out base hit, the first of his two hits, to bring home Yoni Rodriguez. One batter later, Kahl hit a two-run home run to increase the lead to 3-0.

Philadelphia got its run in the top of the fourth on a Wells double to right field. Lorenzo started the inning with a bunt single, went to second on a Quaranta, and scored Wells' second hit of the day.

Dillon Good earned the win after holding the Rams to one run on three hits in five innings of work. C.J. Kilgarriff (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out one over four innings in a losing effort.

Philadelphia returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader against Chestnut Hill on Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. on Alumni Field.
