Baseball Suffers Two Narrow Defeats At Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (6-7) came up short in both games of a doubleheader at Bridgeport on Friday.

GAME ONE – L, 1-0
The Rams and Purple Knights were locked in a pitcher's duel through much of the opener, with the two squads combining for just five hits through the first five innings. Jefferson's best chance to score was in the fourth with a runner on third and one out but a strike out and a pop up ended the frame.

Bridgeport finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. The first two hitters were retired but the following three Purple Knights all reached to load the bases. Bridgeport then drew a walk to force in the lone run of the contest.

The Rams had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh with Chris McLean on second. Arturo Figueroa sent a base hit to left and McLean was waved home. However, the Purple Knights gunned McLean down at the plate to hold on to the lead. After a hit by pitch, Bridgeport recorded the final out to secure the win.

Quick Hits
- Lucas DeStefano: 1-for-3
- Efrain Santiago: 1-for-3
- Arturo Figueroa: 2-for-3
- Samuel Bass: Loss, 5.2 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 5 BB, 9 K

GAME TWO – L, 6-5 (10 inn.)
It did not take nearly as long for the two sides to put up runs in the nightcap, with eight combined runs being scored in the first inning. Alex Gonzalez led off the game with a double for the Rams then Lucas DeStefano plated him with a single. After a caught stealing, the next three Jefferson hitters reached to load the bases for Ryan Sawyer, who upped the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Arturo Figueroa followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Not to be outdone, the Purple Knights answered with five runs in their half of the first. Bridgeport recorded an RBI double and a pair of two-run singles. The pitchers then settled in and the score remained 5-3 over the next five frames.

With the Rams down to their last at-bat in the seventh, DeStefano led off with a walk, stole second, then went to third on a groundout. Zack Austin smacked a triple to left center to score DeStefano and get Jefferson within one. Chris McLean followed with his own clutch hit, driving in Austin with a base knock to right center to tie the game. The Rams later had runners on first and second but could not score another run.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Purple Knights had the winning run 90 feet away with one out but Jefferson was able to get a strikeout and a groundout to send the contest into extra innings. However, the Rams were not able to put anyone aboard in the additional frames and Bridgeport won it in the 10th on a walk-off RBI single.
