Baseball Splits Twin Bill Versus Bloomfield

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (20-18, 11-8 CACC) split its conference doubleheader with Bloomfield on Saturday.
 
GAME ONE – W, 14-6
The Bears opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the opening frame. They stole home and scored on an error. The Rams answered with four runs in the bottom half to take the lead. Ryan Sawyer led off with a home run, Zack Austin doubled in a run, Chris McLean came home on a fielder's choice, and Austin scored on a sacrifice bunt.
 
Bloomfield evened it up in the second, scoring on an error and a bases-loaded walk. Jefferson regained the advantage in the third when Efrain Santiago blasted a two-run homer to make it 6-4. The Rams increased their lead with a three-run fourth. Alex Gonzalez and Lucas DeStefano scampered home on a pair of wild pitches, and Arturo Figueroa hit an RBI infield single.
 
Cole Kriger delivered an RBI base knock in the fifth to make the score 10-4. The Bears cut into the deficit with a run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to trail by four (10-6). Jefferson tallied four insurance runs in its half of the sixth. Santiago singled in a run, Justin Espinal launched a two-run shot, and Sawyer scored on an error.

GAME TWO – L, 8-5
Bloomfield jumped on Jefferson for seven runs in the second inning. The Bears totaled four hits, three walks, and one hit by pitch during the frame. The Rams climbed back in it with a four-run fourth. Cole Kriger singled in a run, Ryan Sawyer drove in one, Justin Espinal scored on an error, and Alex Gonzalez came home on a groundout.
 
In the sixth, Bloomfield upped the margin to four (8-4) with a solo homer. Jefferson closed the gap to three once more in the bottom of the inning on Sawyer's RBI base hit. The Bears turned a double play to hold the Rams to one in the sixth then allowed only one baserunner in the seventh in finishing off the win.

CACC PLAYOFF PICTURE
With five games remaining in the regular season, Jefferson currently holds the third and final playoff spot in the CACC South Division at 11-8. Chestnut Hill sits behind the Rams at 9-7 but has three games in hand. The Rams and Griffins play their three-game series this week which may decide who's in and who's out.
