PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (10-9) took three out of four games against St. Thomas Aquinas (6-9) over a pair of non-conference doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
SATURDAY GAME ONE – W, 3-2
The Rams scored all three of their runs in the opening frame.
Chris McLean doubled down the third-base line to drive in a run and
Joe Cencetti knocked in two with a base hit. Both of the Spartans' runs came on a two-run bomb in the second. It was a pitcher's duel the rest of the way with the teams combining for just two hits after the STAC homer.
Samuel Bass went the distance for Jefferson, allowing two runs on two hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts.
SATURDAY GAME TWO – L, 4-1
Both teams pushed across a run in the first. The Spartans scored on a sacrifice fly while the Rams received a two-out, RBI infield single from
Diego Santiago. STAC led off the second with a home run to take the lead and held it the rest of the game. The Spartans added two insurance runs in the fifth on a passed ball and a sac fly. The Rams were held without a hit after the second inning.
SUNDAY GAME ONE – W, 10-6
The Rams jumped on the Spartans early with four runs in the first inning. The first five hitters reached base and
Alex Gonzalez scored on an error while
Gabe Silva drove in
Jay Kalieta with a base hit. One run scored on a fielder's choice and another came home on another STAC miscue to make it 4-0.
The Spartans got their first run on a sacrifice fly in the second before Jefferson tallied one run each in the third and fourth frames.
Diego Santiago singled in Silva and
Marquise Wood scampered home on a wild pitch.
STAC rallied to tie it with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Spartans recorded a solo homer, two-run single, an RBI groundout, and a run-scoring base hit. However, the Rams claimed the lead for good with another four-run inning, this time in the bottom of the sixth. Three straight singles loaded the bases to start the frame before Kalieta drove in a pair with a base knock through the right side. Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch and
Chris McLean added an RBI single.
SUNDAY GAME TWO – W, 5-0
Sean Morgan tossed six scoreless innings to lead Jefferson, taking a no-hitter into the seventh before allowing a lead-off single. Morgan recorded nine strikeouts during the outing. Offensively, the Rams broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by
Gabe Silva and
Diego Santiago with two outs. Jefferson added three insurance runs in the sixth via a two-run double by
