Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep Over Franklin Pierce
 
PHILADELPHIA – Thomas Jefferson University baseball (8-4) had two doubleheaders this weekend as they hosted Franklin Pierce University (6-10) in a rematch of the CACC Regional Tournament. The Rams had two different days against the Ravens as they held onto a 9-5 win and 14-2 blowout on Saturday while Sunday saw both games go to extra winnings with Jefferson winning 10-9 in nine and 11-10 in eight.
 
WHAT HAPPENED
GAME ONE: W, 9-5
  • Franklin Pierce got on the board first with single to right field for a 1-0 lead. Jefferson responded as a one-run sacrifice fly by Thomas Matuszewski evened it in the bottom of the same inning
  • Three runs in the third off a two-run Joshua Lopez single to right field and a fielder's choice from a Justin Espinal at-bat made it 4-1 in favor of the Rams
  • The Ravens went on a run to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth and fifth inning. Hewlette nailed a solo homerun in the fourth while Lugo grounded double play got another runner to homeplaye. DeAndrade single to left field made it 4-4
  • Matuszewski got the Rams ahead once again as he had a two-run homerun to right field in the bottom of the fifth
  • Javon Hernandez single bunt up the middle made it 7-4, and an error by Franklin Pierce put two more runs for the Rams that eventually had it at 9-5
  • Danny Kerr pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits and five runs, with only two being earned, while striking out six batters

GAME TWO: W, 14-2
  • The second game was more lopsided for the Rams. Lopez got a two-run single to right field to begin the scoring day for the Rams
  • Justin Egner singled to second to add another run while Hernandez hit the ball to right field for two mure as it became 5-0 after only two innings
  • Gabe Silva brought a Jefferson runner home with a right field hit in the third. Lou Spadaforda followed suit with his own hit to the same spot as it became 7-0. That changed on a Jay Kalieta three-run homerun as it was now a double digit lead for Jefferson
  • The Ravens added a run following an error but Jefferson had their own as well from a Silva at bat while a walk turned the game to 12-1
  • Matuszewski grounded out RBI and Luis Beato Mora single to right field helped Jefferson secure a 14-2 win in game two
  • Albert Bobadilla pitched five innings, allowing three hits and one run, with it not being earned, while having six strikeouts on the day. Will Hoffman and Tyler Sickles each pitched one inning, giving up one hit and striking out two batters on the day

GAME THREE: W, 10-9 (9 INNINGS)
  • The Ravens got out ahead in the second with a solo homerun to go up 1-0. Jefferson responded in the third as Egner scored off the base to tie it up. Matuszewski got a three-run homerun to put the game 4-1 in favor of the Rams
  • Kyle Kozlowski joined the action with a solo homerun in the fourth to make it 5-1
  • The Ravens added a run off a double to center field, but the Rams responded on a pass ball
  • DeAndrade tied the game in the seventh with a grand slam to left field, making the score 6-6 as the game went into extra innings
  • Franklin Pierce got ahead off a sacrifice fly to center field, making it 7-6. Beato Mora kept the Rams in the game as he scored off a pass ball to see the game all tied as they went into the ninth
  • The Rams looked to put the game away as they had two outs in the top of the ninth before Hewlette got a two-run homerun for Franklin Pierce, seeing the score go to 9-7 in favor of the Ravens
  • Jefferson refused to quit, as Kalieta's sacrifice bunt put a runner on second and third that setup Hernandez's two-run single to center field, tying the game up once more
  • After a Colin Wilson single up the middle and intentionally walking Matuszewski, Alexander Angulo took one for the team as a hit-by-pitch secured the 10-9 win in game three for Jefferson
  • Tyler Behm started the game with 5.0 innings pitched, giving up five hits with two runs, one earned, as he struckout a career-high nine batters. Kris Giangreco pitched 1.2 innings, with one hit and three earned runs on the day. Silva got on the mound for 1.1 innings, going for twos in hits allowed, earned runs, and strikeouts. Cole Roschel earns the win, pitching one inning as he allowed two hits, two earned runs, and had one strikeout alongside Giangreco

  • Game four, or two on day two, started as Lopez's sacrifice fly to right field put the Rams up 1-0
  • The Ravens added three runs in the top in the second from a homerun, a double, and a failed pickoff attempt that saw an error by Jefferson to be up 3-1
  • Jordan Tiburcio single bunt added a run on the board. Egner's single to left field tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the same inning
  • Arias two-run homerun in the fourth put Franklin Pierce up 5-3. Jefferson once more got scores added, this time taking the lead on four runs as Enger bunted, Kalieta made it off a throwing error by the pitcher to add two runners to homeplate, and Hernandez's grounded out turned the game around once more for a 7-5 lead
  • Lopez had another sacrifice fly to turn it to 8-5. The Ravens capitalized in the seventh as they had five runs to go in the bottom inning with a 10-8 lead
  • Kozlowski's ground out got one run for Jefferson, putting Silva on third base. A pass ball got him home to make it 10-10 as they went into extra innings
  • After Jefferson held Franklin Pierce to no runs in the eighth, they set themselves up for a game-winning play with the bases loaded. Kozlowski answered the call on a single to the left side, securing the series sweep with a 11-10 victory
  • Kevin Baez started the game as he pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters. AJ Lefton came in pitching 1.2 innings with one strikeout while five hits were recorded. Steve Graziano ended the day with 1.1 innings under his belt, not allowing a run while securing the victory

Jefferson will now look to get a win back against the Marauders as they host #21/24 Millersville University on Wednesday, March 12 at 2 p.m. The Rams fell to the Marauders 13-3 on March 4.
