Down Goes No.1! Softball Opens the CACC Tournament with An Upset Over Host Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Heading into the game as the underdog, Thomas Jefferson University softball (16-24) capitalized on the Purple Knights mistakes and got two runs in the sixth as the Rams earned the 2-0 upset victory over host team and N0.24 nationally-ranked University of Bridgeport (33-13) in the opening game of the CACC Championship Tournament.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Both teams were using great fielding and pitching through the first five innings of the contest to maintain a scoreless opening round of the tournament
  • Jefferson faced a scare in the fifth as the bases were loaded, but a flyout to center field kept the game at bay
  • The Rams capitalized on a fielder's choice error for runners to get on second and third. That led to Bridget Shields scoring on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. Remy Smith added to that with a one-run single up the middle and momentum went in favor of Jefferson as it was 2-0 heading to the bottom of the inning
  • Bridgeport got a runner on third after a throwing error to first base and a steal to have the winning run at bat. Another flyout kept the upset more alive as both teams went into the final inning
  • After three batters down for Jefferson, the Rams allowed only a single as a fouled out to first and two grounded out completed the upset win over No.1 seed, nationally-ranked team, and host Bridgeport 2-0.
  • Shields, Claudia Alldred, Smith, and Sabrina Pastino all had one hit on the day, with Smith earning an RBI. Delaney Alix pitched all seven innings for the Rams, striking out three batters and only allowing two hits all game, both of which came in the final two innings
  • The Purple Knights saw McKenzie Morgan and Emily Chase have the only hits on the day. Katie Burawski had a day on the mound for Bridgeport, allowing four hits with 12 strikeouts in the loss to Jefferson
