No.17 Baseball Wins Game One, Falls to Franklin Pierce to Force Necessary Matchup


CENTER VALLEY, PA – No.17 nationall-ranked Thomas Jefferson University baseball (40-16) went up against Franklin Pierce University (33-20) in the NCAA East Regional Tournament #1 bracket. Both teams looked to take both contests on Saturday to head to the Super Regional. Jefferson came back from 0-2 to earn a 9-2 victory but dropped their second contest to the Ravens 22-5. 

WHAT HAPPENED 
GAME ONE: W, 9-2 

  • The Rams were down early as Franklin Pierce had a two-run homerun in the second inning. Jefferson answered on a fielding error score to cut the Ravens lead to 2-1 

  • Jefferson battled back after facing Franklin Pierce's Niklas Pavia, who had 12 strikeouts on the day 

  • Thomas Matuszewski, recently named to the NCBWA All-East Region First Team, gave the Rams new life as he had a three-run homerun in the fifth to make it a 4-2 lead 

  • Justin Egner added to that with a two-run double down the left line in the sixth inning. Two wild pitch scores and a walk in the eighth secured the 9-2 victory on the scoreboard 

  • Albert Bobadilla got the win as he pitched eight innings, giving up three hits and two runs with five walks while striking out six batters. Aiden Barbour pitched the ninth inning with one strikeout

  • The Rams went down early against the Ravens once again in the second game as two singles had it to a 3-0 game after one inning 

  • Matuszewski got a run on a double down the left line to make it 3-1 

  • Franklin Pierce got a homerun in the third to make it 5-1 

  • Jefferson was unable to get any momentum in the fourth as they allowed 10 runs on six walks, four hits, and a hit by pitch as Franklin Pierce was ahead 15-1 

  • Lou Spadafora and Gabe Silva got runs in the fourth to make it 15-4, but the Ravens got seven runs in the final five innings to go ahead 22-4. Will Woodring single to the left side added another score to end the night at 22-5 

  • Kevin Baez took the loss with four hits and eight runs on 3.1 innings pitched as he struck out three batters. Matthew Pashley and Cole Roschel each had at least one strikeout on the day.

UP NEXT 
Jefferson will now compete in game five of the NCAA East Regional against Franklin Pierce on Sunday, May 18 at 12 p.m. with the winner heading to the NCAA Super Regionals.
