Box Score Long Island, NY- The Philadelphia
University men's basketball team (3-1) used a second-half take-over
to seize a 52-47 victory against the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans
(2-4) on Monday night. The Rams controlled the tempo in the
second stanza with help from junior Russell
Frederick (Baltimore, MD/ Calvert Hall) who exploded for
19 points and three rebounds.
The Rams fell behind early but inched to within one 23-22 at the
half.
Junior forward Malcolm Ingram (Philadelphia,
PA. Solebury Prep) had 15 points and seven rebounds on the
night.
The Spartans could not find an answer to Frederick as the Rams
went on an 8-0 run late in the second half and did not look
back. STAC had 12 players' score, but just one- Akeem Comas
tallied in the double digits (14).
PhilaU outshot the Spartans 57%-39%from the field in the second
half.
Up 50-44 with a minute to go, senior Carroll
Mitchell (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) sunk one of
two free throws to extend the lead to 51-44. The
Spartans proved to be persistent as they nailed their only three of
the contest on the ensuing play to close the gap 51-47 and tried
for another trey with 20 seconds remaining but came up short.
Frederick went to the line again to score the Rams final
point and seal the 52-47 win.
The Rams held their biggest lead (9) in the second half.
