Box Score Caldwell, NJ- Philadelphia University (22-5,
14-2 CACC) closed out the regular season on a six-game winning
streak in a 63-57 victory at Caldwell on Friday night. PhilaU
was led by junior forward Mike Yocum's (Dresher,
PA/ Episcopal Academy) 16 points and 13 boards.
Ram's head coach Herb Magee won his 877th game
with the win, passing former Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp's NCAA
record. With just two more wins, Magee will tie the record of
former North Carolina Coach Dean Smith, who posted a total of 879
career wins.
In the contest, the Rams outshot the Cougars 47%-42%, despite
hitting just 50% from the charity stripe on the night.
The Rams went on an 11-0 run midway through the first half,
capped by a trey from senior guard Mike Dunn
(Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin) that gave PhilaU a 16 point lead
(31-15) at 3:53. Dunn finished with 15 points (4-10 from
long-range).
At the break the Rams led 37-23.
In the second half, PhilaU junior guard Russell
Frederick (Baltimore, MD/ Calvert Hall) nailed a trey at
15:10 to keep his squad at a comfortable distance, but the Cougars
pieced together a 9-0 run to make it 49-44 with under 10 minutes
remaining. Frederick had 14 points on the night.
A steal and subsequent jumper by CC's Manny Perez with just :30
left gave the Cougars a brief one-point lead, but Dunn hit another
three-ball to give the Ram's the lead for good as they closed out
regulation with four straight points to make the final 63-57.
The Rams enter the post-season with a CACC Quarterfinal game vs.
Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday (3/3) at 7 p.m. at the Gallagher
Athletic Center on Herb Magee Court.
