Box Score Philadelphia, PA- It wasn't pretty, but the
Philadelphia University men's basketball team (14-6, 6-1 CACC) got
the job done in a 56-34 win over the University of the Sciences
Devils (4-11, 3-4 CACC) at the Gallagher Athletic Center on Tuesday
evening. The win- PhilaU Coach Herb Magee's
894th , puts the Philadelphia icon just six wins away
from the magic 900 career wins mark and nine wins from breaking
Bobby Knight's NCAA wins record (903).
PhilaU senior guard Russell Frederick
(Baltimore, MD/ Calvert Hall) led the way with a game-high
11 points, adding five boards and five assists to boot.
The Rams outshot the Devils (42%-23%) from field goal range,
while kicking in 30% three-ball shooting (USP made just two treys
on the night).
PhilaU jumped off on a 10-2 run, ballooning their lead to as
much as 13 (27-14) with under two minutes on a layup by freshman
guard Ed DiRugeris (Plymouth Mtg., PA/
Pennsbury). DiRugeris had eight points on the night.
The Rams led 27-16 at the break.
In the second go-round, USP opened with a three from their
leading scorer Curtis Fitch- who had nine points on the
night. An 8-0 PhilaU spurt capped by a lay-up from PhilaU
senior forward Malcolm Ingram (Philadelphia, PA/
Solebury Prep) gave the maroon and gray a 45-27 lead at 6:48.
Ingram was the high rebounder on the night with 12 along with eight
points.
The Rams continued to outplay the Devils, as senior forward
Mike Yocum (Dresher, PA/ Episcopal Academy)
tallied nine points, six boards and four blocks to help his squad
to the 56-34 win.
