Lady Rams rally to defeat Holy Family, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing 13-8 in the fifth set, the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team stormed back to score the final seven points of the set to take the set 15-13 and defeat Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Holy Family, 3-2, in the Campus Center Friday night.

After opening their string of four straight road matches with a victory, the Lady Rams improve to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in the CACC. Holy Family is now 10-15 overall and 8-6 against the conference. Philadelphia took the season series from Holy Family, 2-0.

During the final run, the Lady Rams only needed two kills, one from Brittany Olson and the match-winner from Terra Ecker. Philadelphia's defense forced four attack errors, including a block by Jordan Milligan and Ellie Edgar

Philadelphia fell behind in the set 5-1 thanks to a pair of service aces by Emma Herring, a Rachel Johnson kill, a Lady Ram attack error, and having a point awarded to Holy Family after receiving a red card. The Lady Rams pulled within 6-4 on an Olson kill. The Tigers scored four of the next five points to take a 10-5 lead.

The Lady Rams won the first and third sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-13. Holy Family was victorious in the second set, 27-25, and the fourth set, 25-23.

Olson paced Philadelphia with 13 kills, three in the final set, and 10 digs. Ecker finished the match 12 kills and nine digs. Danielle Carney recorded a match-high 20 digs and 11 kills.

Heather Martin tallied 30 assists and 12 digs, while Allyson Schillinger had 15 assists and 12 digs.

In the first set, the Lady Rams broke it open with an10-3 run to take a 19-11 lead.  Carney had four kills in the set.

Holy Family held a slim lead for a majority of the second set. Philadelphia was able to move in front 24-23 after a pair of Tiger attack errors. After trading points, Holy Family scored the set's final three points to even the match.

Philadelphia's defense dominated the third set as it forced the Tigers into 13 errors, four via blocks, and a hitting percentage of -.113 (seven kills-13 errors-57 attempts).

Holy Family never trailed in set four as it posted 17 kills.

Philadelphia returns to action Saturday, Oct. 20 against Concordia (N.Y.) at 1 p.m.
