Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team got back on-track with a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over host Chestnut Hill Friday evening in Sorgenti Arena.
The Lady Rams improve to 17-8 overall and 11-5 in the CACC after taking the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-18.
Outside hitter Allison Manley led Philadelphia's offensive attack with eight kills. Middle hitter Chelsea Hughes had a seven-kill performance and a hitting percentage of .429 (seven kills-one error-14 attacks). Outside hitter Brittany Olson contributed 10 digs and five kills, while middle hitter Ellie Edgar filled up the box score with five kills, five service aces and three block assists.
Setters Allyson Schillinger and Heather Martin tallied 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Libero Morgan McCarthy was the team's defensive leader with 15 digs.
Abby Gruver and Rachel Biro had 10 kills a piece for the Griffins (8-19, 4-12 CACC). Gruver also had a match-best 16 digs.
Olson and Manley each had three kills and five digs in Philadelphia's first set victory. The Lady Rams took control of the set with straight points on kills by Hughes and outside hitter Lauren Elliott, and two Griffin attack error to break a six-all tie. A Chestnut Hill ball-handling error gave Philadelphia an 18-9 lead, its largest of the set.
Philadelphia came out of the gate strong with a 10-4 run to begin set two. Hughes had three kills, and Edgar recorded two service aces and a block assist with outside hitter Danielle Carney during the early surge. After the Griffins closed with 20-16 on a Biro kill, the Lady Rams slammed the door by winning five of the set's final six points.
A run of six straight points helped the Lady Rams take a 10-4 third set lead. Olson highlighted the charge with a pair of service aces. Olson later gave Philadelphia its largest lead of the set with a solo block to make the score 15-7. Manley and Hughes each had three kills in the set, while setter Nina Morvin came into the match and recorded five assists.
Philadelphia returns to the Gallagher Center to take on Post in a CACC match Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. Prior to the match, Carney and Edgar will be honored in a Senior Day ceremony.
