Women's volleyball's win streak ends with 3-1 loss to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team's winning streak ended at five after a 3-1 loss (27-25, 23-25, 21-25, 19-25) to host Millersville in a non-conference match Tuesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.

Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) recorded 11 kills and 23 digs, both team highs, in the loss for the Rams (10-8). Sophomore Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles E.) contributed nine kills and 14 digs.

Sophomore setter Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla./Springstead) tallied 19 assists, while junior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded 18 assists. Freshman defensive specialist Michelle Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) chipped in with 20 digs.

In Philadelphia's first set victory, the Rams posted 16 kills and a .238 hitting percentage, while holding Millersville  (10-12) to a hitting percentage of .094. Despite the better hitting percentage, Philadelphia didn't have its first lead in the set until a block by freshman middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) put the Rams ahead 26-25. Olson gave Philadelphia the set win with her fifth kill of the set.

The second set was a tight affair, featuring 10 ties. Three straight Marauder kills broke a 19-all tie and gave the home team a 22-19 lead. The Rams fought back to close the margin to 24-23 with a kill from junior middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). The rally ended when a Katie Lesinski kill handed the set to Millersville. 

A 4-0 spurt by the Marauders put them ahead 9-3 in the third set. Four straight Millersville errors allowed Philadelphia to close within 9-7. Then, Millersville scored seven unanswered points to open up a 16-7 lead and take control of the set.

After five early ties to open the final set, Millersville scored back-to-back points on a service error and a service ace to move in front 8-6. The Marauders pushed the lead 13-9 on a Taylor Smith Kill. Philadelphia was able to get as close as 19-18 thanks to three straight Millersville attack errors. Millersville ended the match by scoring six of the final seven points.

Lesinski had a match best 15 kills for Millersville. Mary Paul added 12 kills, while Brooklyn Smith had 21 digs.

Philadelphia returns home to take on Wilmington (Del.) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
