Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) recorded 10 kills as the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team extended its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) winning streak to 11 with a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20) triumph over Georgian Court Monday night in the Gallagher Center.
Junior outside hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) contributed eight kills and six digs. Senior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) tallied a team-best 16 assists. Senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa./South Side) had a match-high 24 digs.
Philadelphia (16-8, 15-2 CACC) led through the first set after opening the action with seven of the first eight points. When Georgian Court (15-12, 13-4 CACC) cut the gap to three (8-5), Philadelphia stopped the rally with 12 of the next 14 points to open up a set-high 13-point lead at 20-7.
The second set was controlled throughout by the visiting Lions as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Philadelphia fought back to narrow the margin to 16-14 on an Olson kill. Georgian Court reestablished a seven-point cushion with five straight points to make the score 21-14. The Rams were only able to pull within two on three difference occasions down the stretch.
Set three was the closest set of the night with 10 ties and five lead changes. With the set tied at 18, Philadelphia took advantage of two Georgian Court attack errors to take a 20-18 lead. A kill from sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) increased the lead to 24-20.
Attack errors made the difference in the final set as Philadelphia committed just two, while Georgian Court had 11. With the help of four Lion attack errors, the Rams took a 7-1 lead. The lead got as small as three on three different occasions, but Philadelphia responded with a run each time to keep Georgian Court at bay.
Tatiana Villariny Rodriguez posted a match-high 17 kills for the Lions, while Jaslene Lopez had 40 assists.
Philadelphia heads to Goldey-Beacom for a CACC match on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
