Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) winning streak is still intact after getting past upset-minded Goldey-Beacom 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 25-8, 22-25, 15-11) in a conference match Wednesday night in the Jones Center.
The Rams have now won 12 consecutive conference matches and improve 17-8 overall, 16-2 against the CACC. Philadelphia closes out the regular season with a CACC match at Bloomfield on Saturday, Nov. 9 at noon. A Philadelphia win and a Wilmington (Del.) loss at Nyack would give the Rams the southern division title.
Sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) paced the Rams with a team-high 14 kills and five total blocks (one solo, eight assists). Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) added 10 kills.
Sophomore setter Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla./Springstead) posted a double-double with 14 assists and 13 digs. Senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa./South Side) had a match-high 22 digs.
A 5-0 run, which included three attack errors from Goldey-Beacom (6-22, 0-18 CACC), helped Philadelphia take a 7-3 set one lead. A block from Hughes and sophomore setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) capped a 7-2 run to extend the Rams' lead to 15-8. The Rams led by as many as nine multiple times.
Goldey-Beacom appeared to take control of the second set early on with 12 of the first 17 points. Philadelphia fought back with the help of seven Goldey-Beacom attack errors to take a 21-20 lead. A Lightning ball-handling error gave the Rams a two-point advantage (22-20). After a Goldey-Beacom timeout, the Lightning responded with the final five points of the set to tie the match at one.
Philadelphia broke open a close third set with 14 straight points to turn a four-point lead into a 24-6 cushion. During the surge, senior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded six service aces and Goldey-Beacom committed five attack errors.
The Rams had an 11-6 set four lead after an Olson service ace. Goldey-Beacom chipped away at the Philadelphia lead until it was able to move ahead 21-20. After freshman outside hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tied the set at 21 with a kill, the Lightning closed out the set with a 4-1 run.
Philadelphia overcame a 10-6 deficit to take the final set and the match. Four straight kills allowed the Rams to tie the set at 10 and force the Lightning to call timeout. The stoppage didn't cool off the Rams as they scored three more points on Lightning attack errors to take a 13-10 lead. Philadelphia won the match on another Goldey-Beacom attack error.
Goldey-Beacom's Kadi McCoy had a match-high 21 kills.
