Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team opened its 2013 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) slate with a 3-0 victory over visiting Holy Family Thursday night in the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia (2-2, 1-0 CACC) took the match with scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-20.
Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), senior middle hitter Jordan Milligan (Evansville, Ind./Central), and sophomore outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) all led the Philadelphia offense with five kills each. Junior right side hitter Lauren Elliott (Austin, Texas/North Middlesex) added four kills.
Sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) contributed six total blocks (two solo, four assists) and three kills, while freshman middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had five block assists.
Sophomore setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied a team-high 10 assists. Senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa./South Side) posted a match-best 17 digs.
Holy Family (1-3, 0-1 CACC) got a match-high 20 kills and nine digs from Emma Herring. Sarah Ambach had 10 kills. Chelsea Keegan led everyone with 37 assists. Devyn Ingram was the Tigers' defensive leader with 16 digs.
Philadelphia faced a 10-8 deficit in the first set. After head coach Mark Magarity called a timeout, the Rams responded with five straight points to grab a 13-10 advantage. A Manley kill extended Philadelphia's lead to 16-12 and the team would hang on from there for the set win.
The Rams took the second set despite having just four kills. Philadelphia's defense was solid as it forced 14 Holy Family errors. Philadelphia never trailed in the set and owned a 17-6 advantage.
A 6-1 third-set run gave the Rams a 10-4 lead. Holy Family managed to close the gap to 20-18, but Philadelphia closed out the match with five of the final seven points.
After playing four matches in eight days, Philadelphia now has five days off until it goes to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
