Rams fall to Dominican (N.Y.), 2-0, in season opener

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University women's soccer team opened its 2013 season with a 2-0 defeat to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Dominican (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon at the DC Athletic Field.

The Rams (0-1, 0-1 CACC) put some early pressure on Charger keeper Gina Yanette with a pair of shots in the first 25:08. Yanette was equal to the task to keep the match scoreless.

Dominican (1-1, 1-0 CACC) broke through when Melissa Messina scored from 25-yards out at the 38:34 mark.

Junior midfielder Cristina Nasti (Verona, N.J./Montclair Kimerely Academy) came close to equalizing the match up in the 50th minute, but had her shot ring off the crossbar.

The Chargers got an insurance goal with 7:16 remaining from Olivia Antonopoulos.

Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) made four saves in the loss for the Rams. Yanette finished the match with two saves.

Dominican owned a 9-6 shot advantage.

Philadelphia welcomes Georgian Court to Ravenhill Field for a CACC match on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
