Volleyball earns split in home doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team went 1-1 in a home doubleheader at the Gallagher Center on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia defeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Felician 3-0 and lost to West Chester 3-1.

After the twinbill, the Rams are now 3-4 overall and 2-0 in CACC play.

In the opener with Felician (1-6, 1-2 CACC), Philadelphia swept the match with scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-9.

Junior middle hitter Terra Ecker and sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes both had three kills for Philadelphia in the set one victory. Philadelphia got off to a rough start in set two, falling behind 7-2. The Rams fought back to grab a 12-11 lead. The Rams were able to seal the deal by ending the set on a 6-1 run. Hughes led the offense with four kills in the set. Philadelphia poured it on in the final set and it hit .579 (12-1-19) and forced Felician into a hitting percentage of -.292 (2-9-24). Senior Brittany Olson had four of her team-high 10 kills during the third set.

Olson also recorded 10 digs in the match to record her second double-double of the season. Ecker and Hughes finished the match with nine kills each. Senior setter Heather Martin posted a match-best 22 assists, while sophomore setter Allyson Schillinger added 15 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Manley tied Olson for the team lead in digs with 10.

Olivia Emerson led Felician with a match-high 12 kills.

West Chester (8-0) opened match two off with a 27-25 set one win. Philadelphia fought back in the second set to win it 25-19. West Chester fought back to take the final two sets 25-17 and 25-23.

Set one was a back-and-forth affair as it featured 13 ties and six lead changes. Olson recorded six for her team-high 11 kills in that first set. In set two, Philadelphia broke a 12-all tie with three consecutive points and would not look back to win the set. Manley posted four kills and two service aces.

West Chester recorded a .250 hitting percentage (12-5-28), while Philadelphia hit -.107 (5-8-28) in the third set. In the final set, the Golden Rams trailed early, but used a 3-0 spurt to break a seven-all tie and wouldn't trail the rest of the set.

Olson ended the match with a team-high 18 digs for her third double-double of the year. Manley picked up her second double-double of 2013 as she finished up with 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore setter Nina Morvin recorded her first career double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs.

West Chester got 17 kills from Paige Thommes and 11 kills from Marina Sharkey. Annaless Halbert tallied 42 assists.

Philadelphia returns to the court for a CACC match at Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
