Lyman, Manley lead women's volleyball in 3-0 sweep of USciences

PHILADELPHIA – Outside hitters Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) and Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) combined for 22 of the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team's 43 kills in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19) victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent USciences Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Lyman led Philadelphia (9-10, 7-3 CACC) with 12 kills, while Manley contributed 10 kills. Manley also racked up 15 digs to record her fifth double-double of the year. Setters Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) tallied 19 and 11 assists, respectively. Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) had 15 digs.

Philadelphia had a season-high .283 hitting percentage (43-15-99) in the victory.

The Rams were strong from the beginning as they quickly opened up a 13-4 lead in the opening set. The margin reached 13 (24-11) after three straight Devil attack errors. Middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) closed out the set with a kill. Philadelphia hit .379 (14-3-29) in the set, while forcing USciences to hit -0.091 (6-9-33). Lyman had a team-high four kills.

In the second set, Philadelphia had to overcome a 17-13 deficit to take a 2-0 match lead. The Rams went on an 8-0 surge, capped off by two USciences attack errors, to move ahead 21-17. After the Devils closed within 22-20, Philadelphia won three of the final four points to take the set. Lyman went for seven kills and a .429 hitting percent in the set.

A 4-0 spurt allowed Philadelphia to take an 8-6 lead on a Manley kill. The margin slowly crept up to 16-11 when middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded one of her seven kills. Philadelphia took a set-high six-point lead (20-14) on a kill from middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Manley was the Rams' kill leader in the final set with six on eight attacks.

Amanda DeAngelo led USciences (1-12, 0-10 CACC) with nine kills and eight digs. Kaileen Bevenour added 18 assists and six digs.

Philadelphia welcomes Post to the Gallagher Center for a CACC match on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
