Volleyball powers past Post 3-2

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team won its third match in a row after knocking off Post 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-7) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

The Rams—winners in five of their last six matches—even their overall record at 10-10 and go to 8-3 in the CACC. Post drops to 13-8 overall, 8-3 against the conference.

Outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) recorded her sixth double-double of the year with a career-high 16 kills and 19 digs. Setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied 30 assists and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of 2014.

Middle hitter Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) posted a career-high 13 kills, while libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded a season-best 30 digs.

Outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles E.) contributed nine kills and 24 digs.

Philadelphia got off to a fast start with six of the first eight points of the match to take a 6-2 lead. The Rams' lead never dipped below three from the remainder of the set. A Justus kill gave Philadelphia a set high five-point lead at 24-19.

The Rams opened up another 6-2 lead in the beginning of the second set. This time, Post came back with a 5-1 run to tie the set at seven on a ball-handling error. With the set tied at 13, the Eagles rattled off four straight points, capped by a Hailey Griffin kill, to take a 17-13 lead. A Justus kill pulled the Rams' within a point at 20-19. Post closed out the set with a 5-1 surge.

Philadelphia had to overcome an early 9-3 deficit in the third set. With the help of three Justus kills, the Rams went on a 10-3 run to take a 13-12 advantage. After an Emily Wilman kill tied the set at 21, Philadelphia scored the final four points of the set to take a 2-1 match lead.

Post owned a 21-13 set four lead before things got interesting. Philadelphia would go on a 10-3 run to close the gap to 24-23 on a kill by middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Five Rams had a kill during the rally. Post won the set on an attacking error.

The Rams dominated the early stages of the deciding set and opened up a 12-2 lead. Post made five errors to help Philadelphia open up the 10-point lead. The Eagles couldn't put together a comeback, only getting as close as seven. Philadelphia won the match on a Manley kill.

Skylar German had a match-high 22 kills to lead the Eagles. Wilman added 16 kills and 15 digs, while Julia Slyaktina had 50 assists and 13 digs.

Philadelphia hosts East Stroudsburg in a non-conference match on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
