Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Middle hitters Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) each recorded double-digits kills to lead the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 triumph over visiting East Stroudsburg in a non-conference match Monday night in the Gallagher Center.
With the win, Philadelphia improves to 11-10 overall and extends its winning streak to four. East Stroudsburg is now 6-18.
Hughes had a team-high 13 kills and three blocks assists, while Justus tallied 11 kills and eight total blocks (two solo, six assists).
Setters Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) contributed 22 and 15 assists, respectively. Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) added a team-best 23 digs.
Philadelphia broke the first set open with a 17-6 run to take a 23-10 lead on a kill from outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley). The Warriors recorded 10 errors to help the Rams open up the 13-point gap. Hughes had two of her first set-one kills during the surge. Philadelphia hit .370 (12-2-27) in the set, while East Stroudsburg had a .000 hitting percentage (8-8-30).
Hughes broke a 2-2 tie with three straight kills and sparked a 6-0 surge that put the Rams in front 8-2. After the Warriors cut the Rams lead to 11-8 on a Lydia Redman ace, Philadelphia outscored East Stroudsburg 8-2 to take a set-high nine-point lead (19-10) on a bad set. Hughes finished the set with four kills, while Justus, middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), and outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) added two kills each.
East Stroudsburg rattled off 10 straight points to turn a three-point deficit into a 13-6 lead on a Desiree Claxton service ace. The Rams committed four errors during the Warriors' run. Trailing 15-8, Philadelphia scored seven of the next eight points to tie the set at 16 on a Hughes kill. The Warriors reestablished control of the set with five straight rolls to move back in front 21-16. Philadelphia got as close as 21-18 on an attack error.
Philadelphia overcame an 11-3 deficit to close out the match. With the help of six Warrior errors, the Rams closed the gap to 11-9. After East Stroudsburg moved back in front by five (20-15), Philadelphia would score the next six points to take its first lead of the set (21-20) on a Justus kill. The Rams took the set and the match with three of the final four points. Justus led the Rams in the final set with five kills.
Claxton had 14 kills and 10 digs to lead the Warriors. Annabelle Charlton added 22 assists and 16 digs.
Philadelphia heads to Wilmington (Del.) for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
